Conundrum (solved by Mr. Bickerson)

Hope spent $1 of her allowance on a Disney Princess Diary from the dollar section of our local Target. She had unwrapped it and commenced writing in it on the way home in the car.

Hope: "How do you spell Dear?"

Me: "D-E-A-R."

Hope: "How do you spell Diary?"

Me: "D-I-A-R-Y. Then you make a comma."

Hope: "What's a comma?"

Hank: "Hope, the idea of a diary is that it's a secret. You can't ask people to spell stuff in your diary 'cause then they'll know."

Gary: "Then I guess you need to start your entry 'Dear Journal.'"
